An eldery Catholic priest appeared in court Thursday morning, to face child sex charges for assaults that allegedly took place 40 years ago in Ottawa.
76-year-old Jacques Faucher was charged on Wednesday with gross indecency and indecent assault for “inappropriate contact” with a seven-year-old boy.
Faucher was released on $3,000 bail, but has a number of conditions.
The retired priest must stay away from places where children may be present, including parks, pools and schools.
He is also forbidden from speaking with his accuser.
Archbishop of Ottawa, Terrence Prendergast released a statement on Thursday.
Prendergast announced that Faucher is suspended from all ministry and prohibited him from representing himself as a Catholic priest.
“Our diocese is committed to creating a safe environment in the Church for minors and other vulnerable persons,” said Prendergast in the statement. “We are also committed to a process of justice … for the victims of clergy abuse.”
Faucher will appear in court again on March 12.
