Two firefighters injured in separate fires

OTTAWA, On. — Two Ottawa firefighters have been injured while battling two separate fires Saturday morning.

The first firefighter was treated for minor smoke inhalation while at the scene of a house fire at 546 Kenwood Ave. in Westboro. He was assessed at the scene and returned to duty a short time later.

The second suffered a non-serious injury while battling a kitchen fire on the 4th floor of a apartment at 1833 Riverside Dr. The nature of the injury is not being released. The firefighter was brought to hospital as a precaution.

546 Kenwood Ave. house fire

A house fire at 546 Kenwood Ave. in Westboro Saturday morning has caused $600,000 in damage.

Crews were called to the scene just after 4:30 a.m.

Flames had engulfed the home when crews arrived.

A resident at a nearby home on Hillcrest Ave. had called to report a strong smell of smoke.

Two adults and one child live at the home according to neighbours, but they were out of town for the weekend.

Fire crews have completed a full sweep of the home and have confirmed that no one was home at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

1833 Riverside Dr. apartment fire

Fire crews were kept busy Saturday morning as they battled a kitchen fire at an apartment at 1833 Riverside Dr. just after 6 a.m.

When crews arrived, the fire had engulfed the kitchen.

The resident of the 4th floor unit was able to get out safely. The fire was brought under control at 6:35 a.m.

The cause of the fire isn’t know yet.

Damage is estimated at $70,000.
