OTTAWA, Ont. – Potentially explosive audits into dodgy housing expenses claimed by three senators are expected to be made public Thursday.
The Senate’s internal economy committee reviewed the audit results yesterday and meets again this morning to determine what action it will recommend.
One option is asking the RCMP to investigate possible fraud but the committee may also decide that repayment of improperly claimed housing allowances is sufficient to close the file.
The committee’s report is expected to be tabled in the Senate Thursday afternoon.
The audits deal with the housing allowances claimed by Conservative senators Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau and Liberal Mac Harb.
A separate audit is still being conducted into the travel expenses of Conservative Senator Pamela Wallin.
The uproar over housing allowances erupted last fall and has cast a pall over the already much-maligned upper house.
