Gilles Vaillancourt arrested by Quebec’s anti-corruption squad

MONTREAL, Que. – Quebec’s anti-corruption squad have arrested former mayor of Laval Gilles Vaillancourt.

It’s the highest profile arrest yet in the Quebec construction investigation that led to the Charbonneau Commission and its corruption probe. Vaillancourt was arrested Thursday morning with up to 40 other people.

Vaillancourt was the mayor of Laval for 23 years and sat on that city’s council for 39 years.

Vaillancourt has been under the microscope since the commission started investigating him in November. The commission raided his home, condo and office, seizing several items.
