Carkner sentenced to four-and-a-half years for fatal crash

OTTAWA – The man responsible for hitting and killing a cyclist during a cocaine-fueled drive down Kirkwood Avenue in February 2012, was handed a four-and-a-half year sentence on Monday.

Glen Carkner, 46, was sentenced at the Elgin Street Courthouse, and was also prohibited from driving for the next 12 years.

Carkner was spotted by police speeding down Kirkwood before hitting Nathan Anderson, 32, who was on his bicycle.

Anderson was thrown 10 feet in the air and was seriously injured, and died in hospital 17 days later from the head injuries.

On the day of the crash, police discovered what appeared to be narcotics in the front seat of Carkner’s car.

He pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a crash.
