Morgentaler dead at 90

Dr. Henry Morgentaler has died at the age of 90.

The abortion crusader died of a heart attack on Wednesday morning.

Morgentaler, who was born in Poland and came to Canada after the Second World War, emerged in 1967 as an advocate for the right of women to have abortions on demand.

Three years later, Morgentaler opened the first abortion clinic in Montreal, followed by more clinics across the country.

Pro-life activists targeted the clinics with rallies and protests. Legal battles followed until January 1988, when the Supreme Court struck down Canada’s abortion law as unconstitutional.
