More rain than normal so far in June

OTTAWA – It was a soggy Tuesday in the capital, as yet another rainstorm soaked the city.

So far, June has been wetter than usual, with 69.2 mm of rain. Typically, Ottawa sees 85 to 90 mm of rain during the entire month.

While the rain may give your garden a boost, it could could cause seasonal affective disorder, an issue commonly seen during the winter.

“Lack of sunlight is the defining change,” says Ottawa psychologist Dr. Eva Fisher. “(People)are very likely to get down and just retreat and to have their mood be affected.”

Fisher says the recent cloudy, rainy skies can cause people to feel cranky and sluggish.

She says exercise and a health diet can allieviate weather-induced depression but says if a bad mood doesn’t lift when the clouds part, it could warrant a visit to the doctor.
