BARRHAVEN, Ont. – The cancellation of demolition work on the old Jockvale Road bridge is for the birds.
The City of Ottawa has been given the go-ahead to resume demolition work, after work was ordered stopped because of the discovery of nests belonging to an endangered species of bird.
Before Wednesday’s update, it was looking like tearing down the old bridge would have to wait until after the end of Barn Swallow mating season, in August.
Now the Ministry of Natural Resources has taken a second look.
“It’s my understanding that there are limited nests, at the site, and so that enables us to work around them,” said Steve Desroches, Gloucester-South Nepean councillor.
Work will start on either end of the bridge, and meet in the middle — allowing the nests to be protected and the work to still go ahead.
Replacing the bridge is key to the widening of Jockvale Road — a badly-needed project in a rapidly-growing part of the city.
