Mark Hutt sentenced to life in prison

OTTAWA – The man convicted of scalding his wife with boiling water, then leaving her to suffer and eventually die of septic shock in their basement, has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Donna Jones’ body was found broken, bruised and covered in burns on a makeshift bed of couch cushions in the basement of the Bayshore home she shared with Mark Hutt in December 2009 — just weeks shy of her 34th birthday.

Jones died from septic shock, days later, from the burns that came from being drenched with a pot full of boiling water — something her husband maintains was an accident.

The court heard victim impact statements from 16 of Jones’ family and friends, Tuesday morning.

“I hope you live a long life, feeling regret, every second of every day,” said Kelly Irwin, Jones’ friend, while looking directly at Hutt.

Another friend, Mike Paquette, told Hutt and the court, “my outlook on the world has changed, knowing that there are monsters in my own backyard.”

A vigil to remember Jones, and all victims of domestic violence, is planned in Minto Park at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday.
