OTTAWA – The Sens believe Captain Daniel Alfredsson will return for another campaign and the organization is expecting to get an answer from the 40-year-old by this weekend.
1310News sports anchor Matt Krupovich spoke with the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch about Alfredsson, and other Sens-related topics.
“We’ll have an answer before the weekend, I believe,” said Murray. “I had a really good meeting with Daniel before he left to go back to Sweden. He gave me sort of a time frame and hopefully before the draft I’ll have a chance to at least understand what he’s thinking.”
Murray said Alfredsson recently started working out in preparation for another season.
“I think that’s all he was waiting for. To feel good about another summer of working hard and getting ready for a hockey season,” said Murray.
“He didn’t want to give me an answer until he had at least started that process.”
And another part of the process for Alfie is making sure he can return at a high level.
“For his sake and for people that watch him play he wants to be able to give it at a good level,” said Murray. “He doesn’t want to be a player that’s just hanging on.”
But it’s unclear what Alfredsson’s contract might look like. The Captain played for only $1 million last season, but he’ll likely ask for more if he returns.
“I don’t think that Daniel Alfredsson is going to try to rob them by any means, but I think if he’s going to play he’s going to want his value,” the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch told 1310News.
“I think he’s probably going to see his value at somewhere in that $4.5 – $5 million dollar range.”
The Sens should have a good idea about Alfie’s decision by the NHL draft on Sunday June 30th.
