OTTAWA – Sens fans were delighted Friday when they got news that Captain Daniel Alfredsson had decided to return for another season.
Alfredsson told Swedish TV that he’s coming back for at least one more season
But the Senators need to work out a new contact with the 40-year-old.
Some in the NHL world are speculating Alfredsson could ask for as much as $6-million a season.
The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch says he doesn’t think it’ll be quite that much but the captain will likely want fair value.
“Gonchar got a two-year $10-million deal. I think that Alfredsson is going to be looking at something in that range to be honest,” he told 1310News.
Sportsnet’s John Shannon says he is hearing something around $3-million to $4-million a year.
He says although a guy like Alfie could probably play a few more years, the Sens should only sign him for one year at a time.
“It really has to only be a one-year deal when you consider if it’s a two-year deal and next summer, he decides to retire — that cap hit for $3-or-$4-million or whatever the number — lives for that extra second year.”
The Sens and Alfie camp are expected to begin negotiations as early as Saturday.
General manager Bryan Murray says he wants to get a deal done soon.
Alfredsson has served as Ottawa’s captain for 14 seasons. The six-time NHL all star has scored 426 goals and added 682 assists in 1,178 career NHL regular-season games.
