Arson suspected in Herongate area house fire

OTTAWA – The arson unit is investigating after a home in the Herongate area was damaged after two fires broke out in the house Saturday morning.

Ottawa Fire received a call shortly after 3 a.m. when a caller reported the smell of smoke in the house.

Upon arrival to 66 Gateville Private, firefighters discovered one blaze had started in the basement, while the second started in a bedroom closet on the second floor.

No injuries were reported, but three people have been displaced.

The fire was brought under control just before 4 a.m.

The damage is pegged at around $200,000 and $5,000 to the home next door.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and the Ottawa Police arson unit has been called in to investigate.
