LAC-MEGANTIC, Que. – Police in Quebec say they expect more deaths from Saturday’s train derailment and fire in the community of Lac Megantic.
But police say for now they can only confirm one fatality.
Quebec Provincial Police say it’s difficult to resolve the number of people unaccounted for because of the possibility some people are away from town on vacation.
The 73 car train included tanker cars carrying crude oil that caught fire and wiped out some 30 buildings in the town of 6,000, about 250 kilometres east of Montreal.
The head of the train’s operator Rail World Inc, says the train was parked uphill of the community, but it’s believed the brakes were properly applied.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office said he was planning to visit the community Sunday to see the devastation for himself.
