City cancels summer program trips to Calypso

OTTAWA – The City of Ottawa is cancelling summer program field trips to Calypso, in the wake of provincial safety charges that allege the park had operated unsafe water slides.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority says it has filed 20 charges against Calypso Theme Waterpark in Limoges.

The TSSA says the charges — each of which carry a potential fine of one million dollars — were laid after a year-long investigation.

Spokesman Wilson Lee says the charges relates to incidents on three slides in 2011 and 2012.

Lee says the park is accused of not having enough or properly trained attendants and failing to inform the TSSA after incidents occurred.

Calypso owner Guy Drouin says the park is committed to the safety of its visitors, and his lawyer calls the charges a “surprising abuse of power.”

The water park remains open and Lee says the park’s slides passed an annual inspection.
