Canadians want more vacation time

OTTAWA, On – Canadians ,on average get 17 days of vacation annually, which is about half of what people in many European countries receive.   The Expedia “Vacation Deprivation” survey finds 40 per cent feel they don’t get enough time off or can’t take time off.  More than one quarter have vacation left over from last year.

Beverly Beuermann-King, a stress management consultant with Work Smart Live Smart tells 1310News, the top excuses for not using vacation is they’re too busy or their employer doesn’t have the resources.  “One of the things that I really suggest is you need to talk to both your employer and the team that you work to talk about how things are going to get done when people are going to go on vacation”.

Young Canadian workers are feeling the heat the most with half saying they need more time off and Beuermann-King says that’s something employers should pay attention to.  “They’re shopping around.    They’re looking for employers who are supporting work-life balance”.

She says to tailor your vacation to your work.   If you are time stressed and on the go, plan for plenty of downtime to recharge your batteries.     If your work is repetitive, you may want to consider something highly stimulating and challenging.
