OTTAWA – Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating after fire crews battled a blaze early Sunday morning at an apartment building in Herongate.
Emergency crews responded to multiple 911 calls reporting flames coming from the top of the building at 2870 Cedarwood Dr.
The fire started in the living area of an apartment unit on the 15th floor.
When crews arrived, they found a male, from the unit which the fire started, on the front lawn with burns and began assessing and treating him until paramedics arrived. He was transported to hospital with burns to his face, neck, hands and back, as well as smoke inhalation.
Another woman from the 15th floor was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
Several people were rescued from the 15th floor where smoke had filled several units.
Damages have been estimated at approximately $250,000; however the cause remains under investigation.
OC Transpo, as well as the Salvation Army and Red Cross, were dispatched to the scene to assist and shelter between 15 and 20 people who were displaced by the fire.
Marc Messier with Ottawa Fire said it could be a week before residents are let back inside their units because of smoke damage.
