OTTAWA- Cyclists in Old Ottawa South are on edge after a woman was struck and killed on Tuesday night, near the bike path at Riverside Dr. and Bank St.
The 56-year-old was hit by a cement truck while pedaling near the Billings Bridge Shopping Centre around 6 p.m.
Many cyclists are rattled by the death and told 1310News the intersection in Ottawa South has always been a dangerous spot.
“It’s hard to get across the road,” said cyclist Susan. “Too many cars. They don’t even look when they’re turning.”
Cyclists say it’s difficult to cross Riverside Dr. and continue on the bike path, along the river because cars can’t see around the corner.
“They’re not expecting bikes to be coming across in front of them,” said Keely, who bikes through the intersection on her way to work.
Keely says she has almost been hit by cars and has seen many close calls at the crossing.
“It’s very frightening but I think it’s specific to this intersection,” she said. “We need to plan intersections really carefully where there’s potential for accidents.”
