Operation Dry Water underway in Ontario

OTTAWA, On – Boating is a big part of the August long weekend in Ontario and the Canadian Safe Boating Council in conjunction with the O.P.P. have launched “Operation Dry Water”.

The focus is boating and booze don’t mix.

O.P.P Sergeant Karen Harrington tells 1310News the message isn’t sinking in.

“I think we get the message, but I think we get the message when we think about our motor vehicles”.

Recent numbers from the Lifesaving Society show that alcohol was involved in 39 per cent of boating fatalities.

Harrington tells 1310News if you’re boating under the influence you could lose your driving privileges.

” The link has been made that the decision to drink and boat is the same as the decision to drink and drive”.

Seven of the 20 boating fatalites in Ontario in 2012 involved alcohol.

Harrington says police will also focus on unsafe boat operators and lifejackets.

She says make sure all children are wearing them and that they are approved for use in Canada.
