OTTAWA – A Canadian soldier accused of killing his wife, Melissa Richmond, made a brief second appearance in court on Tuesday afternoon.
Howard Richmond, 50, was charged with first-degree murder after his wife’s body was pulled from a ditch between the South Keys Shopping Centre and Bank St. on July 28.
Richmond was unshaven and had a solemn face as he appeared in court over video link from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
Despite the dark bags under his eyes, he was alert and spoke in a loud, clear voice. He spoke only to tell the court his name and said “yes sir,” when he was addressed by the judge.
The warrant officer reported his wife missing on July 24 after she went for a drive and never returned to the couple’s home in Winchester.
Four days later her body was found partially clothed with stab wounds.
Howard made his first court appearance on Saturday, the same day Melissa was laid to rest in Petawawa. He is an active member of the Canadian military, having done six tours of duty.
He also has a well-documented battle with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The warrant officer remains in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for August 20.
