In honour of the moment where the ‘little guy from Shawinigan’ introduced himself to a protester in a controversial way, a micro-brewery in Jean Chrétien’s hometown has created a special beer.
The ‘Shawinigan Handshake’ features a photo of a cartoon Chrétien choking a devil on the label, and a peach-coloured beer with notes of bread, banana and spruce inside the bottle.
The name comes from the February 15, 1996 incident in which Chrétien placed a chokehold on anti-poverty protester Bill Clennett at a flag day event in Hull.
The former Prime Minister has given his approval for the product which reflects his sharp sense of humour.
