Senators, Legwand agree to two-year contract

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have added a veteran centre to make up for the absence of recently-traded Jason Spezza.

The Senators agreed to terms on a two-year deal with David Legwand Friday.

Legwand had 14 goals, 37 assists in 83 games split between the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators last season.

The second-overall pick from the 1998 draft had spent his entire career with the Predators until he was dealt to the Red Wings at the trade deadline. The 33-year-old struggled in the playoffs, going pointless and registering less than 15 minutes of ice-time in five post-season games against the Boston Bruins.

Legwand has been a consistent point producer — 577 points in 977 regular season games — and reliable in his own end for most of his 15-season NHL career.
