Wall collapse in southern India kills 11 construction workers

CHENNAI, India – An official says 11 people have been killed after the boundary wall of a warehouse collapsed in southern India.

K Veera Raghav Rao, a senior district official, says the accident in a village in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district took place before dawn Sunday after heavy rains.

Those killed were poor construction workers who had built lean-tos and shacks near the wall.

One worker has been hospitalized.

Rao says that cause of the collapse will be investigated.

Sunday’s accident comes less than 10 days after an 11-story building under construction collapsed in state capital Chennai, killing more than 60 people.

Building collapses are common in India, where builders use poor enforcement of regulations to add unauthorized floors and use substandard materials.
