OTTAWA – TD Place Stadium at Lansdowne has marked its official opening.
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, Chairman of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) Roger Greenberg and Chris Stamper of Toronto Dominion hosted the official opening with a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“It’s been remarkable,” says Mayor Watson.
“I remember being hear when we had to knock down the south-side stands because they were condemned. We had to knock down the Coliseum building, the curling building, the food building because they were deteriorating.”
There are 24,000 fans expected to pack into the new stadium July 18 for the Ottawa Redblacks sold out home opener against the Toronto Argonauts.
The stadium has completed new south stands and extensive renovations to the north side.
The south-side stands will offer more than 10,000 seats, 24 suites, concessions, locker rooms, CFL and soccer offices, and a media box at the upper level.
“We’ve revitalized this important asset, it’s something I’m really proud of. It’s taken a long time but I think it’s well worth the wait.”
The surrounding Lansdowne Park will open on August 15 while the retail area will begin welcoming clientele late this year.
Residents are expected to begin moving into the new condominiums in early 2015.
TD Place will also provide free WiFi for anyone in the stands and over 400 HD screens throughout the stadium, and a 60 by 40 feet HD video scoreboard.
Ottawa and the OSEG are stressing that fans heading to game days take advantage of the free ‘Park and Shuttle’ service to Lansdowne, and encourage taking transit, cycling, or walking.
New pathways will also run through the park to make navigating the Lansdowne site as easy and safe as possible.
