Drinking, cannabis use in Ottawa above provincial average

OTTAWA – It appears our ‘sleepy government town,’ has more than its fair share of big boozers and marijuana smokers.

According to a new report from the city titled, ‘The State of Ottawa’s Health,’ 31 per cent of adults drink too much every week and 62 per cent binge drink at least once a year.

Also a big concern for public health officials, the study shows 30 per cent of Ottawa’s high school students binge drink at least once a month.

Drinking habits in Ottawa have been consistently higher than the provincial average, and the same goes for cannabis consumption.

Fifteen per cent of adults in Ottawa said they’ve smoked pot at least once in the past year, which is higher than the 11 per cent provincial average.

The city’s health check up also notes relatively high obesity rates continue to be an issue in Ottawa.

The good news?

Smoking rates have dropped to a historic low in Ottawa – much lower than the rest of the province.
