KANATA, Ont. — Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk was all smiles, Tuesday, as he announced that his team and its charitable arm — the Ottawa Senators Foundation — have surpassed $100 million in donations and community investments in Ottawa and Gatineau.
“By any standards, that’s a lot of dough,” Melnyk chuckled after making the announcement.
The $100 million includes more than $59 million in community projects, more than $25 million given to charities and minor hockey, and more than $21 million in community programs and in-kind donations.
“What this money has meant is that a depressed youngster who has no one to speak to, can pick up the phone and someone on the other end of the line will answer,” said Nepean-Carelton MP Pierre Poilievre.
“That is what $100 million means to the one in two Ottawa-Gatineau residents who have benefitted from this foundation,” he said.
The Sens Foundation’s most recent investments — the Richcraft Sensplex in Orleans, the Accora Village Senators Rink in Bayshore Park, and Sens House in the ByWard Market — helped push the total over the $100-million milestone.
The team also kicked off its first Hometown Tour. Team members will visit towns in the Ottawa Valley and along the Seaway through the rest of August.
