Lowertown Foot Patrol Project making an impact

OTTAWA — Ottawa Police’s Lowertown Foot Patrol Project continues to see great success.

In its second summer patrolling in the Byward Market and Rideau Street area, police have responded to 257 calls, and laid 576 charges.

“The vast majority of those are proactive instances,” said Sergeant Robert Price.

“The officers engage themselves and deal with situations that they see while they’re walking down in that area.”

Charges laid have included drug possession, possession of stolen property, panhandling, trespassing, and public intoxication.

They’ve also located missing persons and also apprehended several people wanted on warrants.

Price says the reaction to Foot Patrol Project has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s often that people who are on the foot patrol team are approached by citizens and business owners who say it’s great to see you out here.”

The project will stay in place until September 1st.
