OTTAWA – A strange odour that brought in the Ottawa Fire HAZMAT team and caused a building’s evacuation was caused by a skunk.
The odd smell was reported after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, by residents of a three-storey building on Cumberland Street south of Rideau. Firefighters smelled a skunk in the area, but reported an unknown odour in the building.
The HAZMAT team checked the indoor air quality at the building as well as a second nearby building as a precaution, but determined the skunk was the culprit.
Eleven people were assessed by paramedics as a precaution.
