Student killed by lightning while walking on University of Waterloo campus

WATERLOO, Ont. – A female first-year student has been killed by lightning on The University of Waterloo campus in southern Ontario.

The university says the student was struck at about 9 a.m. Friday while walking on a pathway leading to student residences.

Waterloo regional police say emergency responders found the student without vital signs and that she was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

Police say they are still in the process of notifying the student’s family in the Markham area but add that she was enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering.

University spokesman Nick Manning says the student’s name and age were not being immediately released but more details were to be released later, once family were notified.

Police and coroner’s officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the Ministry of Labour has also been contacted.
