Canada Army Run nets record number of participants

OTTAWA – The Canada Army Run saw big numbers for this year’s event.

25,000 runners hit the pavement Sunday, and that included a record number of participants in the five-kilometre and half-marathon events.

The annual run first started in 2008, and raises money for Soldier On and the Military Families Fund which support ill and injured soldiers.

Since its launch, the number of participants has more than tripled from 7,000 in 2008 to 25,000 this year.

12,000 people took part in the half-marathon alone on Sunday, marking the fourth straight year the event has sold out.

Maxine Leboeuf of Gatineau crossed the finished line first in the half-marathon, with a time of one hour and ten minutes.

Lyndsay Tessier of Pickering, Ont., was the first female to cross the finish line with a time of one hour and twenty minutes.

Organizers said Sunday afternoon, the run had raised at least $350,000 as they were continuing to count donations.

Last year the Army Run raised $310,000, and has donated more than $800,000 to the two charities over the last six years.
