Woman who lost legs in Montreal train accident returning home to Ottawa

MONTREAL – An Ottawa woman who lost her legs in a train accident earlier this month will be able to return home to Ottawa.

In an email to the Citizen Wednesday night, the Ottawa Hospital said it is ready to accept and care for Sarah Stott, 22. Her homecoming hit a snag this week when she found out her OHIP card had expired since she cancelled her Ontario residency to live in Montreal.

Stott was hit by a freight train in Montreal in the early morning hours of December 8, severing both of her legs.  She had been walking home from her job at a pub when she cut across railway tracks in Pointe Saint Charles.

One leg had to be removed along with her hip bone, while the other leg was severed below the knee.

Stott was hit shortly before 3 a.m., but wasn’t found until three hours later when she flagged down a man working in the rail yard. She told the Citizen she screamed for help, and he came to her side and called 911. That’s the last thing she remembers until waking up around New Year’s —- almost a month later.

Sarah was found in severe shock, and was hypothermic. Since the accident, she has had multiple surgeries and has lost six fingers to frostbite.

Stott said she is ready to return home to Ottawa to continue her recovery and rehabilitation.

Meantime, an online crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $59,000 as of January 30. The campaign was started on December 28 by the best friend of Stott.

The campaign goal is $500,000, to help cover the cost of prosthetic legs and medical bills as she deals with her rehabilitation.
