It won’t be the first Emmy night for “Property Brothers” Drew and Jonathan Scott, but when they attend this year’s TV awards bash on Sept. 20 their show will actually be in the running for a trophy.
When the Vancouver-born identical twins previously attended the awards show — strictly as guests — they were in awe of the galaxy of stars in attendance.
Even though they weren’t nominated, they still found themselves in high demand.
“The cast of ‘Mad Men,’ the cast of ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Dexter,’ there were so many big, big talents who came racing over to us trying to ask us questions about the show, (asking us) to give them inspiration for their places,” recalled Drew in a phone interview Thursday from White Plains, N.Y.
“It’s an honour for us to be able to see that we’re affecting people.”
Now, the brothers hope their show will be honoured with some hardware.
Their real estate/home renovation series is nominated this year in the outstanding structured reality program category. Producers Kim Bondi, Katherine Buck, Gerard Barry and Jessica Vander Kooij are officially named in the nomination.
“Property Brothers” will square off against “Antiques Roadshow,” “Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives,” “MythBusters,” “Shark Tank” and “Undercover Boss.”
Drew is a real estate expert who scouts and negotiates fixer-upper homes on “Property Brothers,” while Jonathan is a licensed contractor and master builder who handles the renovations.
The series airs on W Network in Canada and on HGTV in the U.S. It also has a sizable international audience, with Drew saying the series airs in 140 countries.
“It’s interesting because you never know what’s going to be a hit with the audience, and the show just seems to relate,” said Jonathan during a phone interview from Pound Ridge, N.Y.
“At the end of the day, we’re just helping people out. I love the fact that I get to work with my brother.
“The biggest thing we’ve noticed is we can’t really go out anymore without being recognized. I laugh because if I ever go into the Home Depot or into Rona or something like that, people stop and say they want me to design their kitchen for them while I’m in there because they know us so well from the show.”
