Chris Hyndman of CBC’s ‘Steven and Chris’ has died

TORONTO – The design community in Canada has been shaken by the sudden death of Chris Hyndman at age 49.

CBC has reported that Hyndman was found without vital signs late Monday in a Toronto alleyway but police have not confirmed the report, citing privacy concerns and the fact there is no criminal investigation.

Hyndman, who was best known for his on-screen and off-screen partnership with fellow decorator and husband Steven Sabados, hosted a daily lifestyle series called “Steven and Chris.”

CBC has taken the show off the air out of respect for Hyndman’s friends and family.

His death drew condolences from famous colleagues in the industry, including Jeanne Beker, who called Hyndman one of her closest friends who scraped her off the floor when her marriage broke up in 1998.

Fellow design couple Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan say they were “beyond saddened” while designer Sarah Richardson said Hyndman was “charming, charismatic and full of life.”

Hyndman and Sabados hosted HGTV shows “Designer Guys” and “Design Rivals” and the makeover program “So Chic with Steven and Chris” on Slice and launched the “Steven and Chris” talk show in January 2008.
