OTTAWA — The city will add five new red light cameras to the streets of the capital, next year — a move to improve safety, but also to add revenue to city coffers.
The cameras will be installed in 2016.
“Obviously it does bring revenue in, but first and foremost we have seen evidence that it works extremely effectively at reducing the number of collisions and people running red lights,” said Mayor Jim Watson.
Red light cameras generated more than $3.5 million in revenue for the city in 2014, catching more than 17,000 drivers running red lights.
Watson says speeding in residential areas is an issue the city has heard loud and clear from people in neighbourhoods across the capital.
Traffic measures in the city’s 2016 budget also includes $900,000 evenly split between the city’s 23 wards for traffic calming measures.
