Winterlude unveiled as temperature hits double-digits

OTTAWA — With the temperature hitting 10 degrees Thursday, Winterlude seems very far away.
Despite the mild weather, the Heritage Minister and the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau have helped to unveil the 2016 edition of Winterlude.
Heritage Minister Melanie Joly isn’t worried the weather won’t cooperate.
“When it’s minus 30 this winter,” she said Thursday, “we will be quite nostalgic when thinking of how it was in December.”
She’s also issuing a challenge to the mayors, centred around a skate on the Rideau Canal — something Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson pointed out might not end well for him.
“As some residents of Ottawa know, I’m not very good with winter sports,” Watson joked, referring to the snowmobile accident last winter that left him with a broken hip.
Winterlude starts January 29, with hundreds of activities at Confederation Park, Jacques-Cartier Park, and the Rideau Canal Skateway.
It runs for three weekends, and wraps up on Family Day, which falls on February 15.
The coming edition of Winterlude will feature the ice sculptures at the Crystal Garden and the Snowflake Kingdom.
