Canadians don’t like Trump: poll

By Erin Criger

It’s unsurprising but nonetheless welcome news: Canadians don’t like Donald Trump and they don’t like seeing the bombastic American’s name on buildings north of the border.

A new poll from Angus Reid Institute shows 56 per cent of Canadians say Trump’s name should not continue to appear on buildings in Toronto and Vancouver. That number skyrockets for people who actually to live in the shadow of those buildings.

Seventy-one per cent of people who live in central Toronto (the 416 area code) want his name gone. In Metro Vancouver, the number is 60 per cent.

“Younger Canadians (those ages 18 – 34) and women are more likely to say the Trump name should go, as are those with a university degree and those with household incomes less than $50,000 per year,” the poll found.

“In contrast, narrow majorities of men and those with household incomes over $100,000 (51 per cent of each group) say the Trump name should stay.”

Canadians also don’t like Trump’s statements about Muslims and feel his comments are bad for society. Trump’s statement calling for “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” had the disapproval of 67 per cent of Canadians.

About the same number, or 63 per cent, said the statement is “bad for society” because it encourages fear and hatred of Muslims. However, the rest (37 per cent) take the opposite view, saying Trump is good for society because he’s bringing “politically incorrect” topics into public discourse.

One thing we all agree on? He’s receiving too much attention.
