OTTAWA – A frostbite advisory has been issued by Ottawa Public Health for Wednesday.
The forecast high of minus 4 was reached early Wednesday morning, with the temperature expected to hover around minus 11 for the rest of the day, feeling colder with the wind chill.
There is no snow in the forecast for Wednesday, giving city crews a chance to clean up the remnants of a clipper system that hit the city Tuesday.
Much of the wintry blast hit in the afternoon, right in the middle of the commute home. The weather was causing slick, slippery roads and a messy commute Tuesday afternoon with a number of collisions.
Ottawa received 8.2 cm of snow through the day, and into the evening hours. Areas south of the capital were experiencing heavier snow and higher snow totals, thanks to lake enhancement off Lake Ontario.
Ottawa has received 20.8 cm of snow so far in January.
When a winter storm happens, salt trucks begin treating the city’s major arterials once snow accumulation begins. Collector roads are then plowed around 5 centimetres of snow, with residential side streets being plowed if the city receives 7 centimetres.
As for when that plow will come by your house — don’t look to the city’s website for help, today. Its new Where’s My Plow web tool will be offline for this snowstorm. Where’s My Plow was a target of user complaints during our first major storm of the season, two weeks ago, so the city says it will do more tweaking to the service.
