Duffy trial could wrap up Tuesday

OTTAWA — Closing arguments at the trial for senator Mike Duffy could wrap up Tuesday after the Crown quickly made its oral submissions Monday.

Both sides have already handed in hundreds of pages of written arguments and the Crown spent its time in front of the judge alleging that the senator has played fast and loose with the facts and taxpayer dollars.

Prosecutors claim Duffy was dishonest and deceitful in order to receive money he wasn’t entitled to.

The defence will make its oral arguments Tuesday and expects to wrap up mid-day.

The senator has always maintained the expense rules were vague and oversight was lax. Duffy has pleaded not guilty to 31 charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery.
