Man charged with attempted murder after attack on girl near ‘tent city’

GATINEAU, Que. – A 49-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed in broad daylight, Tuesday afternoon, near the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau.
Marc J. Bellfoy was also charged with aggravated assault.
The attack happened on a bike path near Highway 50 at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police say bystanders stepped in to stop the attack and make a citizen arrest. The girl was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, Gatineau Police tore down a ‘tent city’ where homeless people have been living for several months.
Johanne Legare — President of the Commission Scolaire des Ports de l’Outaious — told 1310 NEWS police have been called to the homeless camp around 300 times.
She said there have been dozens of confrontations between homeless people and students.
