Ottawa Fire urging proper fireworks safety

OTTAWA — Canada Day is right around the corner and if you are planning to set fireworks off in the backyard, Ottawa Fire wants you to keep safe.

Fire safety may seem obvious, but fire officials want you to keep it top of mind.

Tip 1: Make sure you are well prepared.

“We recommend a fire hose, a water pail or a fire extinguisher, if you have one, really close by when you are discharging fireworks,” said Ottawa Fire Public Information Officer Danielle Cardinal.

Tip 2: Look around and make sure there are no overhanging trees or dry grass around.

Tip 3: Whoever is setting of the fireworks needs to be sober and alert.

“You are appointing a responsible person to be in charge of the fireworks display and that involves them not being impaired,” said Cardinal.

Tip 4: Since it is quite dry in the city, without a good, soaking rian, consider attending one of the public, professional fireworks displays.
