Police, paramedics kept busy on Canada Day

OTTAWA — While hundreds of thousands of people packed the downtown to celebrate Canada’s 149th birthday, Ottawa Police arrested 49 people throughout the day and overnight.

Most of the arrests happened between 11:30 p.m. Friday and 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Forty-eight people were arrested for non-criminal matters.

Paramedics also treated 84 people, 65 of who were treated and released with another 19 sent to hospital.

That number is still well below last year’s total of 454 and is likely due to the inclement weather the Nation’s Capital experienced.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the Ottawa-Gatineau area, with sometimes dramatic downpours showering party-goers.
