Judge adjourns OHS hearing

OTTAWA–A judge has adjourned the hearing into the Ottawa Humane Society’s request for an injunction in order to restore its investigative authority.

The matter will now be heard August 8.

In a statement the OHS says the request for adjournment was made by the OSPCA.

“It’s disappointing,” said OHS Executive Director Bruce Roney, adding there’s little else they can say, as the matter is before the courts.

The society is seeking an injunction following the July 18 notice from the OSPCA that the affiliate status of the OHS had been suspended.

“All of our investigative authority flows from that,” Roney said.

Roney says the revokation of affiliate status is a “punishment” move for questioning the OSPCA board over governance issues, including the April decision to cancel voting rights of affiliate organizations like the Ottawa Humane Society.

It is not performance related, he emphasised.

The OSPCA is handling all non-urgent calls regarding neglect or cruelty investigations.
