Phase 1 LRT costs set to increase

OTTAWA — The new leg of the LRT is supposed to be on time and on budget – at least according to the City of Ottawa – but some enhancements are set to increase the project’s costs.
The $2.1 billion price tag for the Confederation line was set through a fixed price contract with the Rideau Transit Group. However, extra side projects are set to add to that cost which, according to Postmedia, are related to incremental costs for 57 transportation projects across the city – ten of which are related to the Confederation and Trillium lines.
Those projects include a bus loop at Tunney’s Pasture, waiting areas at stations and adding segregated bike lanes to the Booth Street bridge, and will cost the city $8.5 million.
To receive the federal funds, the projects need to be completed by March 2018 — the same time the Confederation Line is set to open to passengers.
The additional costs will go to city council for approval on Wednesday.
