Glebe businesses get green light to open on statutory holidays

OTTAWA — Glebe businesses can now open on statutory holidays, starting on Thanksgiving Monday.

The Ontario Municipal Board ruled Thursday that stores in the Glebe, including those at Lansdowne, can legally open on six holidays through the year.

The Ottawa and District Labour Council had gone before the board with concerns that smaller businesses who don’t want to open on statutory holidays will feel like they have to, now that larger stores can do it.

There were also concerns employees would be forced to work on holidays.

But Andrew Peck, Executive Director of the Glebe BIA, tells the Carol Anne Meehan Show there are protections in place for workers.

He says the Employment Standards Act states that if a person can’t work on a holiday for personal or family reasons, there can’t be any reprisals against them.

Peck says the BIA has created an information package for Glebe businesses that will be going out next week so everyone understands the rules.
