OTTAWA – Firefighters on aerial ladders plucked stranded residents from sixth-floor windows after fire broke out in a Lowertown highrise, early Wednesday morning.
Crews were called to 215 Wurtemburg St. around 2:15 a.m., after several 911 calls reporting smoke on the sixth floor and alarms going off.
Nine people were treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation, and were taken to hospital in stable condition; the patients included three children and a police officer. Four others were assessed on scene.
At least 70 people have been displaced by the fire, but that number may be revised as aid workers do a full head count.
Displaced residents are being sheltered at a nearby community centre.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and there is no word yet on a cost estimate for the damage.
