OTTAWA – Police have identified the victim and made an arrest in the city’s latest murder.
Police say Soloman Odekunle, 21, was killed in a stabbing around 2:30 a.m. Sunday near the St. Laurent Shopping Centre.
The police investigation centred around Piper’s Bar and Grill, at St. Laurent Boulevard and Ogilvie Road.
A 27-year-old man is in custody in connection with the murder, and is due in court Monday.
The weekend murder was the 17th this year in Ottawa; the most seen in one year since 2006, which saw 16 murders.
Postmedia reports Odekunle was an international student from Nigeria and had been inside Piper’s, fighting with another man over a woman.
Businesses around the bar tell the paper it’s attracted a “rougher” crowd, blaming its patrons for the vandalism of cars in the parking lot.
Odekunle’s killing was the third stabbing this past weekend in Ottawa; two men were injured in separate incidents late Friday night and early Saturday morning.
No one is in police custody in either of those incidents.
