Teen arrested in connection to racist vandalism at places of worship

OTTAWA — A teenager has been arrested after a Jewish Community Centre in the west end was vandalized overnight.

Police Chief Charles Bordeleau made the announcement as he attended a multi-faith gathering Saturday morning at a synagogue that had been targeted with anti-Semitic graffiti on Thursday.

The arrest comes after a rash of vandalism at places of worship across the city.

The male faces charges including uttering threats of a dangerous weapon and mischief to religious buildings and did appear in court Saturday.

The Jewish community centre is the sixth place to be targeted over the last week, following two synagogues, a mosque, a united church with a black minister and a Jewish woman’s home in the Glebe, which also serves as the Glebe Minyan, a Jewish gathering space.
