OTTAWA – It’s a big boost for the Caring and Sharing Exchange’s hamper program.
About 100 volunteers spent the morning at Lansdowne’s horticulture building packing 500 hampers with the makings of a Christmas dinner.
Executive Director Cindy Smith tells 1310 NEWS, the hampers provide much more than just a meal.
“It means joy and it means dignity — and relief to a certain extent,” Cindy said. “I remember growing up and smelling that Christmas turkey cooking, and such, but not everyone has that opportunity.”
However, Smith says the need is up 23 per cent this year, and many more still need help.
“Right now we’re at just about 3,000 individuals; significantly down from where we were a week ago, but still quite significant,” Smith said.
The Caring and Sharing Exchange is accepting donations right up until Friday.
