Mayor Watson unveils 2017 cauldron at city hall

OTTAWA – Mayor Jim Watson unveiled a special Ottawa 2017 cauldron outside city hall, on Thursday, as the capital moves closer to kicking off the New Year.

Watson will be joined by 400 youth on New Year’s eve for a special ceremony to mark the start of 2017.

Terror is a worry following European attacks

As Ottawa prepares for a busy 2017, Watson says the threat of a terror attack is top of mind following a deadly truck attack in Berlin, Germany, earlier this week.

“It’s going to be a very special year for the city and country,” said Watson in a year-end interview with Carol Anne Meehan on 1310 NEWS.

“As you see what’s going on around the world, the horror of the truck crash in Berlin — that kind of activity obviously worries anybody that represents a large city, or in our case, the capital city.”

Ottawa police has set aside $1.5 million for extra security at 10 major events scheduled for 2017.

Some of those events, including the Grey Cup and Red Bull Crashed Ice, are expected to attract thousands of people to Ottawa.
