No charges after confrontation between motorist, cyclist

OTTAWA – There will be no charges laid in connection to a heated altercation between a cyclist and a motorist last week.

Police say the confrontation, captured on video last Thursday, has been investigated and that the complainant did not wish to pursue any charges.

Ottawa City Counncillor, and avid cyclist, Jeff Leiper tells 1310 NEWS, while you do see arguments between drivers and cyclists, it rarely goes beyond a verbal exchange.

“Emotions get ramped up,” Leiper says. “Travelling around the city is difficult no matter what mode of travel you’re taking, so you see words exchanged sometimes between parties on the road.”

Leiper says one solution to the problem is to do a better job of segregating cyclists and motorists in the city, because both find it very frustrating to share the road.

“There is a change though that has to happen in the city, with respect to, particularly driver behavior to understand that bikes are on the road now. They are not going anywhere.”
