Library board to vote on new location for central branch

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Public Library Board is set to vote on new location for central branch at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Some residents have panned the preferred site of the new central library with some arguing that the location at 557 Wellington Street, just west of Bronson, isn’t nearly as central nor accessible as they think it should be.
The group ‘Bookmark the Core’ say the location is all wrong.
The idea the library should be built at Confederation Park, which is a national historic site owned by the NCC, has been bluntly rejected by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.
“I’m dead set against using scarce green space in the central core to put up a development like a library,” Watson told 1310 NEWS. “We always hear from people in Centretown, there’s not enough green space, and then you have group coming around advocating that we rip up a portion of Confederation Park, which is very well-used.”
The library board will vote on the Wellington Street location during Tuesday’s board meeting, and if approved, would go to council for a vote on February 8, 2017.
